On Threaded Wings

On Threaded WingsAerial Arts at the Lobero

The Santa Barbara Centre for Aerial Dance returns to the Lobero Theatre for an evening of art and awe-inspiring dance as performers take to the air in a kinetic journey of ritual and release.

Weaving textile installations from New York artist Tamika Rivera with contemporary dance and the ancient tradition of the aerial arts, the theater will be transformed into a visual narrative of colorful expression and electric strength that will leave audiences at once grounded and spiritually elevated.

Set to an acoustic backdrop of strings and percussion, and featuring metal and fabric apparatus dyed and stitched using traditional techniques from Europe and the Americas, On Threaded Wings honors and highlights the generational kinetic and artisanal practices that have been an integral part of the female experience since time immemorial. Don’t miss this transformative evening filled with magical thinking and expansive realism that reinforces women’s fundamental contribution to the fabric of civilization.

Direction and Choreography by Ninette Paloma with additional choreography by Simon Solberg, Robin Bisio, and Shelby Lynn Joyce.

Since its 2006 inception, the Santa Barbara Centre for Aerial Dance has been at the forefront of a growing international movement that blends floor and aerial dance with artistic precision. From New York to France, choreographer and director Ninette Paloma has debuted her innovative approach to the ancient discipline of aerial arts with a contemporary canvas that has gained international accolades and garnered a dedicated following. Each year, students and professionals from across the globe travel to Santa Barbara to study an innovative floor to air movement language created and developed in Paloma’s Santa Barbara studio. In 2014, Paloma founded the Santa Barbara Floor to Air Festival, California’s first international aerial dance festival and artist residency platform that has served over 50 professional artists across the globe to date. Choreography credits include 2011 Vesna, 2012 Indah, 2013 The Violet Hour, 2014 Belline, 2015 Petite Fleche, 2016 Elemental You, 2017 Empathy in Blue Minor, and 2018 Sonnet of Limbs, eight evening-length works that have debuted in Santa Barbara, San Francisco, New York, Chicago, Mesa, and La Baule, France.

Tamika Rivera is a Brooklyn based artist and human rights activists who creates pieces that invoke the curiosity of modern day artifacts. Rivera explores her own heritage, and social complexities, which allows her work to transcend through space and time while threading the spirit of human consciousness. Tamika’s mission is to spread healing through creation. Inspired by the human experience, nature, and native cultures around the world she is guided to create one of a kind modern sacred objects. Rivera’s work has been published in the LA Times, Pulp Lab, and has shown at Cooper Hewitt museum Design Store, Wanted Design, Arts Restore LA: Hammer Museum, Makers Market at Sculpture Park NY, and the Architectural Digest Show.
