Rodgers and Hammerstein’s "South Pacific"

Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Get swept away to the tropical island paradise of Bali Ha'i as Opera San Luis Obispo (OperaSLO) presents Rodgers and Hammerstein’s South Pacific on October 12 and 13, 2019., at the Performing Arts Center in San Luis Obispo.

The Tony award-winning musical is set against the dramatic background of a South Pacific island during WWII.  “It weaves romance and humor with thought-provoking issues about culture and prejudice,” said Brian Asher Alhadeff, OperaSLO Artistic and General Director. “There’s a reason why it’s been a favorite with audiences for 70 years – it’s a great story full of romance, adventure,  and a musical score featuring some of the most popular tunes of all time.”

Many of the songs in South Pacific are iconic favorites – “Some Enchanted Evening,” “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair” and “There’s Nothing Like Dame.”

Premiering on Broadway in 1949, South Pacific was a hit with 1,925 performances and 10 Tony Awards. Based on James Michener’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, South Pacific follows two intercultural love stories. Nellie, a spirited nurse, falls in love with Emile, a French plantation owner who has two children from his late Polynesian wife. Lieutenant Cable falls for an island girl named Liat. Both Americans grapple with their prejudice regarding interracial romances.

The musical is also known for the hilarious and raucous antics of Navy Seabees, marines, nurses and pilots as they bide their time waiting for deployment against the Japanese fleet.

On a serious note, the show will honor those who served and gave their lives during WWII. LTJG Joseph E. Brocato, U.S. Navy, is arranging for World War II veterans and guests to attend the musical. The veterans will be recognized by U.S. Congressman Salud Carbajal, escorted by Grizzly Youth Academy cadets, and commemorated with the National Anthem played by the OperaSLO Grand Orchestra. The veterans recognition is sponsored by Jim and Carolyn Brescia, Tom and Evelyn Fowler, and Joan Sargen.

Gabriel Manro, a two-time Grammy Award-winning baritone, portrays “Emile.” As a child, Manro attended schools in Atascadero and Templeton. He has performed in numerous OperaSLO productions including the role of “Curly” in Oklahoma! in 2018. He currently performs with LA Opera. Skye Privat, a recent graduate from Pacific Conservatory Theater (PCPA) is “Nellie,” Dori Duke plays the sassy merchant role of “Bloody Mary,” William DuFuria delivers comic relief as “Luther Billis”, and Gregory Gorrindo, is “L.T. Joseph Cable.”

“This piece of theatrical history is full of truths of the time, classic music, and joyous occasion. Finding the truth in this story’s reality, alongside the music of Rodgers and Hammerstein can create an experience everyone can connect to.”, says Director, Zach Johnson, who has been directing, choreographing, and performing throughout SLO county for the last 12 years.

This grand production of South Pacific features amazing dancing, expansive sets, vivid costumes, all accompanied by the OperaSLO Grand Orchestra. The production is choreographed by Drew Silvaggio, with costumes by Barbara Harvey Abbott, and musically directed and conducted by Brian Asher Alhadeff.
