The Pomona College Music Department welcomes Ghanaian singer-songwriter and GaDangme traditional musician Okaidja Afroso and his multi-instrumental trio for a performance ranging from fishermen’s chants to contemporary compositions. Born into a family of musicians and storytellers, Okaidja Afroso is a Ghanaian dancer, multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter, and arranger. Inspired by the connections between Ghanaian music and the music of the African Diaspora, Okaidja has released several albums which embrace a dynamic fusion and honor his cultural roots. Celebrated for his unique style and sound, Okaidja has been commissioned by the Portland Repertory Theater to rearrange the folk gospel tune Children Go Where I send Thee and the Los Angeles based dance company – Jacob Jonas The Company to compose original music. Get to know the Okaidja Afroso Trio in a special pre-concert workshop at 11:30am on November 22 in Lyman Hall. This intimate session includes audience participation and discussion of the artists’ craft. Open to the public no registration required.
