Los Angeles Youth Orchestra

Los Angeles Youth OrchestraThe Los Angeles Youth Orchestra, conducted by Founder and Artistic Director Russell Steinberg, presents the Spring 2019 concerts on Sunday, April 14, 2019 at 4:00pm at UCLA Schoenberg Hall and on Monday, April 15, 2019 at 7:30pm at the Ambassador Auditorium in Pasadena.

Brahms Symphony No. 4, Academic Festival Overture and world premiere of Russell Steinberg’s Cosmic Dust 2.

The Symphony Orchestra performs the complete Brahms Symphony No. 4, the last symphony Brahms composed and a work that has had enormous impact on everything from later composers like Mahler and Sibelius to film. The Symphony Orchestra is also performing the world premiere of Russell Steinberg’s Cosmic Dust 2, a follow up to the original Cosmic Dust which premiered in 2015 and was performed by LAYO during their tour to Vienna and Prague.

The Ruth Borun Concert Orchestra performs the first movement of Haydn’s late Symphony No. 99 as well as two dances from Isaac Albeniz’s Suite Espanola, and the tune made famous by the old TV show Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Funeral March of a Marionette by Charles Gounod. Conducting Intern Samuel Chung, a senior in high school, will lead the Ruth Borun Concert Orchestra in an arrangement of Brahms Academic Festival Overture.

The Los Angeles Youth Orchestra (LAYO) is an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, whose mission is to contribute to our communities and the future of culture by developing a passion for music in young musicians that lasts a lifetime through the study and performance of classical and contemporary music. LAYO serves over 120 student musicians each year, ages 8-18, who hail from 60 different public and private schools. LAYO rehearses at the Encino Community Center on Sunday afternoons and regularly performs at UCLA Schoenberg Hall and Ambassador Auditorium. LAYO has also appeared at Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Hollywood Bowl and Carnegie Hall. The orchestra toured internationally to Vienna and Prague in 2015 and to Italy in 2017. Many of the orchestra’s alumni have gone on to prestigious universities including Juilliard School, Cornell, Berklee College of Music, UCLA, USC, Harvard and New England Conservatory.
