Handel’s Messiah

Handel’s MessiahThe Cathedral Choir conducted by Director of Music Joseph Bazyouros, The Dream Orchestra and Opera Chorus of Los Angeles conducted by Music Director Daniel Suk present Handel’s “Messiah.”  With guest soloists. More than 1,200 music lovers from all over Southern California began their 2018 Christmas celebrations with Handel’s Messiah at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels by the Cathedral Choir, the Dream Orchestra, the Opera Chorus of Los Angeles.
That performance is now a holiday tradition because the Messiah will again be performed at the Cathedral on Sunday, Dec. 8, at 7 p.m. by the Cathedral Choir under Music Director Joseph Bazyouros, The Dream Orchestra and Opera Chorus of Los Angeles conducted by Music Director Daniel Suk, soprano So Young Park, mezzo-soprano Taylor Raven, tenor Arnold Geis and bass Steve Pence.

The Cathedral is truly a one-of-a-kind venue for the holiday tradition and this will be its only Messiah performance.
“It is Joseph Bazyouros who has made this a holiday tradition and we’re so honored to participate again this year,” said Daniel Suk, Music Director of the Dream Orchestra and Opera Chorus of Los Angeles.
“It is his vision to bring all cultures and faiths to enjoy it at the Cathedral, because he believes that great music can bring everyone together.”
Bazyouros became the Cathedral’s Director of Music in January 2018, following his work as Director of Music at the USC Caruso Catholic Center and parish positions at  St. Frances of Rome Church in Azusa and St. Martin de Porres Church in Yorba Linda. He served on the Music Advisory Board for the Office for Worship for the Diocese of Orange and on the Diocesan Liturgical Commission. He serves on Liturgical Commission for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Bazyouros is a member of the Los Angeles chapter of the National Association of Pastoral Musicians and currently serves as Chapter Director.
Suk and the Dream Orchestra have performed Messiah  at major Southern California venues each holiday season since he founded the professional, non-profit orchestra seven years ago.
George Frederic Handel wrote the oratorio Messiah in 1741 it debuted in Dublin in April 1742, premiering in London a year later. Scriptural text was compiled by Charles Jennens from the King James Bible. With its joyous “Hallelujah” chorus, Messiah has become a hugely popular Christmas musical staple with many sing-along performances, even though it was originally a Lenten/Easter offering.
A native of South Korea, soprano So Young Park thrills audiences with her “stunning” (L.A. Times) and “dead-accurate” (New York Times) voice. Recently she made her Metropolitan Opera debut as the Queen of the Night in “The Magic Flute” and New York Philharmonic with performing the Queen’s iconic aria. Ms. Park returns to LA Opera to perform the Queen in Magic Flute, and Houston Grand Opera for the same role.
Mezzo-soprano Taylor Raven joined LA Opera's Domingo-Colburn-Stein Young Artist Program during the 2017/18 season. She made her company debut in “Candide.” Her mainstage appearances during the 2018/19 season included “Don Carlo,” “Hansel and Gretel” and “The Clemency of Titus.” She has performed with Wolf Trap Opera Company, Pittsburgh Opera, San Francisco Opera and other companies.
A native of Chehalis, Washington, tenor Arnold Livingston Geis returns to Washington National Opera’s Domingo-Cafritz Young Artist Program in the 2018–2019 season, in “La Traviata,” “Silent Night” and “Taking Up Serpents.” He has performed with  the Chautauqua Opera,  LA Opera, New York City Opera, LA Master Chorale, Long Beach Opera.
Steve Pence, bass, is featured in the 2019/20 season as the Sergeant in “La Bohème” and as the Second Armored Man in “The Magic Flute.” He was also recently featured in several roles in the company's 2018 production of “Candide.” Previously, he has had solo roles in “Jenufa,” Carmen,” Billy Budd,” Pagliacci” and “The Festival Play of Daniel.”
