Brahms: Ein Deutsches Requiem

Brahms: Ein Deutsches RequiemAll Saints' Choir and Orchestra
Craig Phillips, conductor

Camille King, soprano
Ian Walker, baritone

Brahms began his moving and unique setting of the ‘Requiem’ following the death of his friend and colleague, Robert Schumann in 1856. When his mother died in 1865, Brahms was determined to finish the work that he had started. Rather than setting the usual Latin text of the Requiem Mass, Brahms chose his own verses from Martin Luther’s German translation of the Bible. The selected passages not only mourn the dead, but also comfort the living. The resulting work is one of the great masterpieces of the Romantic choral literature.
