The spirit of Mozart bookends this sparkling program. Beginning with Heitor Villa Lobos’s Sinfonietta No. 1, a work dedicated to the memory of the Austrian composer, we’ll continue with David Diamond’s brilliant Concerto for Small Orchestra.
A contemporary – and competitor – of Aaron Copland, the Concerto is one of many works by Diamond making their long overdue appearances on American concert stages. The Los Angeles Philharmonic’s Principal Clarinetist, Boris Allakhverdyan, joins the orchestra to present Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto. Completed only a few weeks before the composer’s untimely death at age 35, it offers a poignant glimpse into what might have been, had he lived a full life.
