Mozart/Da Ponte Trilogy: The Marriage of Figaro

It was Mozart who brought Beaumarchais’ subversive French comedy (set in Seville!) to Lorenzo Da Ponte for their first collaboration. Da Ponte turned the play into a libretto in six weeks, rewriting it in poetic Italian and removing all of the original’s political references. It became one of Mozart’s greatest successes and endures as a model of what a comic opera can be, LOL funny and also profoundly wise and moving.
