The Who's Tommy
The Chance Theater is pleased to announce that it has selected the innovative rock musical The Who’s Tommy as its third production of the 2010 season, scheduled to run July 2 through August 8.
"“Boy did the Chance Theater ever nail this one!! ... Go see Tommy at the Chance and you will be glad that you did!” - Performing Arts LIVE (mn)
Based on The Who’s classic 1969 double album rock opera about a “deaf, dumb and blind boy” who becomes the leader of a messianic movement, The Who’s Tommy tells the dramatic story of a young boy’s journey to manhood through the muted pain of catatonia after witnessing the murder of his mother’s lover by his father. Tommy finds his calling as a pinball champion who becomes idolized by the public and the press, but his celebrity machine eventually begins to fall apart.
The musical, which originated at the La Jolla Playhouse in 1992 before playing on Broadway for more than two years, is packed with memorable songs penned by The Who’s founder and guitarist, Pete Townsend, including “I’m Free” and “Pinball Wizard.” The Who’s Tommy won five Tony Awards, including Best Score for Townsend’s iconic music.

“Boy did the Chance Theater ever nail this one!! This was my first musical at this delightfully intimate space and I was skeptical as to how well they would do with such an ambitious project. They delivered on all counts. With great skill and creativity they transformed their space into an ideal venue for this Broadway musical.
There are many exemplary performances by this outstanding ensemble cast. Of note for me were the vocals of Paul Hovannes (Cousin Kevin), Wendi Ann Hammock (Mrs. Walker), Kevin Cordova (Captain Walker) and Kyle Cooper (Specialist). Beach Vickers also delighted the audience as Uncle Ernie.
The set, lighting effects, video and sound were all top notch and made you feel as though you were right in the middle of the action. Musical director, Mike Wilkins and his musicians were outstanding in their presentation of such classic material. Congratulations Director, Oanh Nguyen, for taking this monster production and making it your own. Go see Tommy at the Chance and you will be glad that you did!” - Performing Arts LIVE (mn)
