The Merchant of Venice

The Merchant of VeniceThis is a limited run of Shakespeare's beloved Comedy, The Merchant of Venice. While considered by many a "problem" play because of the conflict between the Christians of Venice and Shylock, The Merchant of Venice is the story of love in a flawed world. Filled with gorgeous language and an challenging story, Merchant of Venice is a perennial favorite!

Young and reckless Bassanio has squandered all his money. He goes to his rich relative Antonio for a loan in order to court the rich and beautiful Portia and by marrying her get himself out of debt. Antoino's wealth is all abroad with his ships, so they borrow money from  the Jewish money-lender Shylock, the interest on the loan being a pound of Antonio's flesh. Bassanio wins Portia, but Antonio's ships don't come in, and Shylock forecloses on the loan and Antonio's life is on the line. Portia arrives at the court disguised as a law scholar, and pleads with Shylock to show mercy, but he refuses. She catches Shylock on a technicality, and Antonio is spared, and the loving couples return to her mansion in Belmont - love and mercy ruling over their world.
