The classic story of ambition and murder is updated to the 20th Century and given a twist in this out door presentation.
WHAT: The Comedic Tragedy of Macbeth. A new take on a classic play.
WHO: Text by William Shakespeare. Adapted and directed by Rebecca Lynne.
This is an outdoor presentation. Audience members are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets. Picnickers and families are welcome. Free parking is available in the park.
ESTIMATED RUNNING TIME: Two hours, with one 10-minute intermission.
In Dunsinane Sanitorium, an early 20th century insane asylum, a lowly janitor (Macbeth) bonds with five patients: a delusional bipolar who thinks she is his wife, a schizophrenic best friend, and three patients with multiple personalities (ranging from the superintendent of the asylum to witches, murderers, and physicians). Join us for this Halloween twist (It’s October) to the classic Shakespearean tragedy.
Director Rebecca Lynne elaborates, "All too often when approaching the tragedies, artists fail to emphasize the comedy that Shakespeare ingeniously weaves throughout each of his plays. By setting this classic in a sanitorium without any adjustments to the original text, Shakespeare's innate humour is grandly emphasized while the entire story is encompassed in layers of fantastic situational comedy. Most importantly, poignant truths found within the tragic elements are thrown into striking relief through the powerful contrasts. The beautiful result is a thoroughly enjoyable, energetic, and thought-provoking Macbeth."
Lynne is the founder of Dean Productions Theatre Company. She has previously directed in New York, Washington D.C, London, Bali, New Jersey and California. Her previous directing credits include The 39 Steps, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Last Five Years, Into the Woods, The Lady of Shallot, Love’s Labours Lost, The Mikado, The Ghost Sonata: The Opera, much more.
