WHAT: The 39 Steps. The hit adventure comedy.
WHO: Adapted by Patrick Barlow. Based on the novel by John Buchan. Original concept by Simon Corbie and Nobby Dimon. Directed by Rebecca Lynne. Produced by Dean Productions.
The 39 Steps was a beloved spy novel, adapted into feature films several times, most notably by Alfred Hitchcock in 1935. Patrick Barlow’s 2008 stage adaptation spoofs John Buchan’s original novel and Hitchcock’s film, playing the action for maximum laughs. Four actors portray over 150 characters in a compact two-hour run time.
A young British gentleman named Richard Hannay befriends a beautiful spy. When he brings her back to his apartment, she is murdered and he becomes the prime suspect. He’s on the run, not only from the authorities, but also from a mysterious organization that has no good intentions for the fate of Western civilization. While evading hot pursuit, he falls in love with another beautiful woman. Only Hannay can stop a vile plot from an evil organization that threatens us all. Can he clear his name, save the world, and get the girl in time?
Director Rebecca Lynne comments, “The complexity of the comedy woven throughout every moment of this piece makes it especially challenging for the artists but a true gold mine. From the start, I realized that the only way to meet this challenge was with an entire team of comedic geniuses, not only the actors (who are unquestionably beyond exceptional), but the designers who build comedy directly into their designs. Even the tech crew must have spot-on comedic timing to perfectly orchestrate the madness.”
Lynne is the founder of Dean Productions Theatre Company. She has previously directed in New York, Washington D.C, London, Bali, New Jersey and California. Her previous directing credits include A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Last Five Years, Into the Woods, The Lady of Shallot, Love’s Labours Lost, The Mikado, The Ghost Sonata: The Opera, much more.
Her gifted cast for The 39 Steps includes (in alphabetical order) Joseph Anarumo, Sam Grey, Skip Pipo and Collette Rutherford.
Projection design: Nicholas Acciani. Sound design: Megan Culley. Lighting design: Rachel Fahey. Costume design: Tsebahat Fiseha.
Playwright Patrick Barlow is also known in his native England as an actor and comedian. He is the author of over twenty produced plays, among them The Balmy Army, The Complete Guide to Sex, The Crazy Navy, Land of Hope and Glory, The Do-It-Yourself Pop-Up Panto Show, Love Upon the Throne, and much more.
At 6:45 each evening, there will be a brief showcase of the work that Dean Productions Theatre Company has done at workshops for children affected by cancer. The company has an ongoing commitment to community outreach.
