STATE STREET BALLET OPENS ITS 2013-2014 SEASON IN SANTA BARBARA’S GRANADA THEATRE ON SATURDAY, OCTOBER 26TH AT 7:30PM. FEATURING EMMY AWARD-WINNING CHOREOGRAPHER ROBERT SUND’S SPIRITED BALLET INSPIRED BY WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE’S ROMANTIC COMEDY, THE TAMING OF THE SHREW, SET TO THE MUSIC OF RAVEL, STRAVINSKY, AND A COLLECTION OF POP SONGS FROM THE 1950’S.
THE TAMING OF THE SHREW is Shakespeare’s homage to the battle-of-the-sexes. San Francisco-based Choreographer Robert Sund takes the audience on a delightfully athletic romp through the trials and tribulations that define the Mars/Venus conundrum, ultimately culminating in an uplifting message that love can triumph over any adversity. The story revolves around Kate, a headstrong young shrew who has inexplicably attracted the love interest of Petruchio, a gentleman of Verona. Petruchio’s courtship of the obdurate Kate is a sly mix of deceit and charm, which eventually results in a happy ending. Costume design for The Taming of the Shrew will give Shakespeare’s classic farce a mid-century Americana look. The score will include romantic music by Ravel and Stravinsky, but will also be laced with pop tunes from the 1950s.
State Street Ballet presented the Los Angeles premiere of choreographer William Soleau’s An American Tango at the Broad Stage in Santa Monica on September 21st and 22nd to sold-out houses. The ballet, about the legendary ballroom dance couple Veloz and Yolanda, enjoyed similar audience success and critical acclaim at its world premiere in Santa Barbara last year.
State Street Ballet’s Santa Barbara season will continue at The Granada Theatre with two performances of The Nutcracker on December 21st and 22nd featuring the Opera San Luis Obispo Orchestra conducted by Brian Asher Alhadeff. On February 21st and 22nd Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs will be performed to the music by Pavlovsky and Khachaturian with choreography by the company’s Ballet Master Marina Fliagina at the newly remodeled Lobero Theatre. The season will conclude on April 5th at The Granada Theatre with choreographer William Soleau’s full-length ballet Carmen, to the music of Bizet and Shchedrin.
