San Diego Civic Organist Carol Williams is preparing for a monumental feat: Playing the Spreckels Organ, for 12 consecutive hours and 15 minutes (a world record!), to raise funds for local wounded warriors.
Donations generated from Williams' marathon organ performance will benefit Operation Rebound, a Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) sports and fitness program for American military personnel, veterans and emergency first responders recovering from physical injuries.
Timed to coincide with Memorial Day weekend, the Operation Rebound Organ Concert Marathon will take place Sunday, May 24th. Organ music will fill the Spreckels Organ Pavilion from 8 AM to 8:15 PM, welcoming visitors to the heart of Balboa Park. Operation Rebound ambassadors will join Williams onstage throughout the day, sharing their personal stories of hope and perseverance in the face of traumatic injuries.
Organizers view the concert as a new Memorial Weekend tradition, drawing residents and visitors to San Diego's Jewel for a day of giving thanks to military veterans, whose courage and sacrifice have defended our democratic values for generations.
Carol's artistry will be showcased on the majestic Spreckels Organ. Visitors will enjoy her renditions of songs spanning a variety of musical genres, including classical, jazz and Broadway show tunes.
Wartime veteran and creative art teacher, Tony LoBue, will direct visitor participation in several hands-on art projects, located at creative stations scattered throughout the organ pavilion, where they can express their gratitude for fallen service men and women as the concert unfolds.
Carol hopes her 12-hour turn on the Spreckels Organ will raise $20,000 for Operation Rebound. During the concert, visitors will be encouraged to place donations in boxes scattered throughout the organ pavilion.
