The Pewter Plough presents Six Dance Lessons In Six Weeks, the striking and touching international hit by Richard Alfieri. The intense, two-character play is about an improbable relationship between a headstrong, straight-laced woman who hires an acerbic and adventurous male dance instructor to give her private dancing lessons.
Lily describes herself as a "tight-arsed biddy", whose life has been cramped by marriage to a Southern Baptist minister. Michael is a former Broadway chorus member and transplanted, blunt-spoken New Yorker. What begins with a rocky start and natural antagonism between opposites tentatively gives way to laughs, jokes, a cry, as they progress through six weeks of dancing the swing, tango, foxtrot and cha-cha.
Despite their mutual irritations which they each are bothered by, including Lily's uptightness and Michael's rudeness, they both gradually open up in more ways than dance steps, becoming unlikely friends, while sharing life's secrets, joys, fears, tragedies, and finally ultimate truths! As Michael teaches Lily to dance, they both learn some unexpected lessons in life, and their relationship develops a daunting courageousness about it!
Six Dance Lessons has become a huge worldwide hit and been embraced by audiences on Broadway, in London, Los Angeles, in cities across the US and in over twenty countries, having been translated into over twelve languages. On Broadway, the leads were played by Polly Bergen and Mark Hamill, while in other productions the leads were played by such actors as Claire Bloom, Uta Hagen and David Hyde Pierce. Playwright Alfieri has written novels, feature films, for television and has received awards from the Writers Guild and the New York Film and Television Festival. The play is in the process of being adapted for a film production.
