Silent Sundays at the Mission Playhouse continue with the sci-fi masterpiece, The Complete Metropolis, Sunday afternoon, January 28th at 2:30pm. Set in a futuristic urban dystopia, this film follows Freder, the wealthy son of Metropolis’powerful ruler and Maria, a poor worker, as they try to overcome the vast gulf separating the classes of their city.
A must see for any sci-fi fan, Metropolis influenced pop culture and many sci-fi films thereafter. With tens of thousands of extras, vast sets, groundbreaking special effects, and over one million dollars spent (in 1927!), this film is a visual masterpiece.
The Complete Metropolis will be shown that includes 25 minutes of missing footage, restoring Metropolis to director Fritz Lang’s original vision. Accompanying the film on the Playhouse’s 1924 Mighty Wurlitzer theater pipe organ is American Theatre Organ Society’s Organist of the Year (1998) Clark Wilson.
This season of Silent Sundays runs through April 2018. The season ends with The Cameraman (1928) starring Buster Keaton on April 22nd.
'Silent Sundays' is produced in partnership with the Los Angeles Theatre Organ Society, as part of the Mission Playhouse's Community Engagement Program, Engage! To learn more, visit missionplayhouse.org or call (626) 308-2865.
