Silent Sundays Series: Safety Last! (1923)

Silent Sundays Series: Safety Last! (1923)Silent Sundays are back at the Mission Playhouse! Season three of the popular silent film series with live Wurlitzer organ accompaniment begins with Safety Last! (1923) starring comic genius Harold Lloyd, Sunday afternoon, September 17th at 2:30pm.

Featuring one of the most iconic images in cinema history (Lloyd hanging off the hands of a clock on the side of a skyscraper), Lloyd plays a small town gentleman who moves to the city in the hopes of finding a successful job so he can marry his sweetheart. A stunt to draw attention to the store he works at takes a turn and comedy and suspense ensue above the streets of Downtown LA. “Laugh out loud funny and jaw-dropping in equal measure, Safety Last! is a movie experience par excellence, anchored by a genuine legend” (

Accompanying the film on the Playhouse’s 1924 Mighty Wurlitzer theater pipe organ is organist Brett Valliant.

The series continues with The Kid (1921), a heartwarming film starring Charlie Chaplin on November 19th, the sci-fi visual masterpiece Metropolis (1927) on January 28th, and The Cameraman (1928) starring Buster Keaton on April 22nd.

'Silent Sundays' is produced in partnership with the Los Angeles Theatre Organ Society, as part of the Mission Playhouse's Community Engagement Program, Engage! To learn more, visit or call (626) 308-2865.
