Schubert Symphonies / Mahler Songs 3

Schubert Symphonies / Mahler Songs 3ARTISTS
Los Angeles Philharmonic
Gustavo Dudamel, conductor
Elina Garanca, mezzo-soprano

PROGRAM
Schubert: Symphony No. 5 (c. 30 minutes)
Mahler: Rückert-Lieder (c. 18 minutes)
Schubert: Symphony No. 6, "Little C-major" (c. 30 minutes)

ABOUT THIS PERFORMANCE
Part three of Dudamel’s fascinating and inspired survey of Schubert symphonies combined with orchestral songs by Mahler begins with the last symphony Schubert composed in his teens, Symphony No. 5, which forgoes the use of clarinets, trumpets and timpani. Around this time, he was particularly infatuated with Mozart, which is clearly heard in the Symphony’s Classical elegance, form and character.
Even the chromaticism of Mozart’s 40th Symphony can be heard in Schubert’s third movement. Two years later, Schubert’s Sixth Symphony suggests the influence of Beethoven, Haydn, and even Rossini, who was very popular in Vienna at the time.
Our Mahler songs for this program are the settings of five poems by Mahler’s favorite poet, Friedrich Rückert. The set is not strictly speaking a cycle because each song can be performed individually, but they are frequently sung together, with the performers deciding the order.
We are thrilled to have Elina Garanca as our soloist: “A throwback to another musical age, when style was grand and voices were plush, the regal Latvian mezzo-soprano Elina Garanca is a rare and exotic creature ... one of the tiny elite of truly great singers active in the world today.” (The Telegraph)
