SHINE Storytelling: "My Own Drummer"

SHINE Storytelling: SHINE celebrates its fifth anniversary of bringing inspiring true stories to the Westside with “My Own Drummer” show on Thursday, September 14 at the Santa Monica Playhouse.  People will share stories of when they followed their heart – even when others thought it was impractical, improbable, or risky.

SHINE will be hosted this month by the effervescent Rahla Kahn, an original member of The Groundlings. Rahla has devoted her life to using laughter to heal. In 1983, she created The Power Of Play, an effective and entertaining approach to healing.  She was personally mentored by author Norman Cousins and radiation oncologist Dr. O. Carl Simonton. Drawing on her experience at The Groundlings, Rahla incorporates improvisational theater techniques into her methods for helping people let go of the causes of suffering and chronic stress.

Live music will be provided by Jaz James, a sultry singer/songwriter who debuted with her first EP “World’s Too Pretty” in 2012. Jaz performed her infections melodies for a growing following across Los Angeles, backed by a band of funky jazz players from the notorious “West Coast Get Down.” With this evolving group of musicians, she became a regular performer at The Stand Hotel in West Hollywood. In 2014-15 she recorded a five-track EP with acclaimed British DJ and producer Thomas Bullock. She’s now finished her new EP for AKO Music with her rotating cast of LA’s best live players. KCET praised her saying “Jaz James…falls somewhere between Joni Mitchell and Billie Holiday.”

Storytellers for SHINE are chosen from some of the nation’s top award-winning storytellers, writers, and performers. New storytellers of all ages and walks of life also take the stage.

SHINE is held monthly at the Santa Monica Playhouse, 1211 4th Street, Santa Monica 90401.  Convenient parking is located directly across the street, in City Parking Structure #1.
