SHINE Storytelling: "Change of Place"

SHINE Storytelling: Sometimes, all it takes to change your life – or your attitude – is a “Change of Place.” On Thursday, July 20 SHINE storytellers will share dramatic, hilarious, or poignant true stories of when they had a pivotal “Change of Place.”

SHINE is a popular, long-running live show that takes place at the beautiful Santa Monica Playhouse. It features storytellers sharing inspiring true stories, as well as talented upcoming and established local musicians.

SHINE will be hosted this month by Kirsten Wasson, a former New York English professor who had her own dramatic “change of place.” Four years ago, Kirsten quit her job, sold her house, and drove to Los Angeles. Since arriving, she has performed stories at many venues including SHINE, Tales By The Sea, P.E.Z., I Love A Good Story, and Tell It!, as well as reading stories on KCRW’s UNfictional. Kirsten is now a counselor at a private secondary school, has published a book of poetry, and her memoir, Unaccompanied Minor: Growing Up in Flight, is forthcoming.

Live music will be provided by Christine Gordon, a thrilling singer/songwriter known as the “St. Barth Rock Star.”  Born in Utah, Christine caught the attention of notable pop and R&B producers in New York. This lead to a stream of performances all over Manhattan, from the Apollo Theatre to Blue Note, and eventually taking her to nearly every soul and jazz venue in L.A.  Her soaring soulful vocals landed her a gig in St. Barths, where she performed nearly every night In luxury hotels, private villas and megayachts. After a decade in the Caribbean, Christine has returned to Los Angeles to record her music and finish her island memoir.

Storytellers for SHINE are chosen from some of the nation’s top award-winning storytellers, writers, and performers. New storytellers of all ages and walks of life also take the stage. Six storytellers are booked in advance, and one is chosen from the audience in a random drawing.

SHINE is held monthly at the Santa Monica Playhouse, 1211 4th Street, Santa Monica 90401.  Convenient parking is located directly across the street, in City Parking Structure #1.

Tickets are $12, with student/senior discount also available. Tickets may be purchased in advance at Cash and checks only at the door.
