"Fahrenheit 451" free Film Night

“Fahrenheit 451”, the scorching 1966 big screen effort directed by the extraordinary François Truffaut, and starring Julie Christie and Oscar Werner, will be shown in the South Pasadena Public Library Community Room on Thursday, March 30  at 7 p.m.

The free Film Night is the concluding event of the “One City, One Book” Big Read project of the Library and the Friends of the Library that has focused on Ray Bradbury’s timeless, somewhat prophetic “Fahrenheit 451”.

Published in 1953, “Fahrenheit 451” tells the story of Guy Montag, a fireman working in an unspecified future controlled by an oppressive government who have placed a ban on books. Rather than putting fires out, Montag's job sees him called out to households suspected to be harboring outlawed literature that he must find and burn. After stealing a book for himself on one such visit, Montag's life slowly unravels. Written in just nine days, the novel’s seen as one of Bradbury's greatest works, and received a terrific screen adaptation that remains a cult classic. The film is directed by the iconic Francois Truffaut as his first and only English language feature film.
In the future totalitarian state, Montag (Werner) starts to read the illegal books he is supposed to be incinerating, while his wife Linda (Christie) wastes away in front of the television. The future population is presented as a mass of conformist zombies deadened by formulaic consumerism and undemanding giant flatscreen TVs.. The bland and sterile future society is in stark contrast to the secret world of freethinkers Montag is asked to join. A makeshift campsite in the forest is home to dozens of people who have opted out of society , each having memorized a book. They spend their time reciting great works of literature to each other so the stories may live forever.
The Library Community Room is located at 1115 El Centro Street. No tickets or reservations are necessary and refreshments will be served. Special thanks to David Lyons/ProOutdoorMovies.
