Piano Spheres presents pianist Gloria Cheng
Grammy™ Award-winning pianist Gloria Cheng starts off the Piano Spheres seventeenth season on Tuesday, September 28 at 8:00 pm. Her half-European, half-American program includes three world premieres by James Newton, Daniel Godfrey, and Gernot Wolfgang as well as works by Thomas Adès, Claude Vivier, Pierre Boulez and Olivier Messiaen.
A long-standing member of the Piano Spheres pantheon of pianists, Cheng has premiered dozens of new compositions, including works composed for her by John Adams, Mark Applebaum, Pierre Boulez, Joan Huang, David Raksin, Terry Riley, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Stephen Andrew Taylor, Chinary Ung, and Andrew Waggoner. Her passionate dedication to contemporary music has brought about close collaborations with many of the leading composers of our time: Thomas Adès, Henry Brant, Earle Brown, Elliott Carter, George Crumb, John Harbison, György Ligeti, Witold Lutoslawski, Steve Reich, and Steven Stucky.
Anthony Tommasini in the New York Times wrote, “It's not just that Ms. Cheng plays these daunting pieces with such commanding technique, color and imagination. She has brought together works that fascinatingly complement one another."

Pierre Boulez, Une Page d'éphéméride
