Concert featuring the MESTO Orchestra, conducted by Nabil Azzam. This is a fundraising concert for the MESTO Orchestra and the UCLA Center for Latino Arts.
Guest Artists: Suzanna Guzmán, mezzo-soprano, and Maurice Raad, Lebanese singer. Also featuring performances by faculty members Steven Loza, Münir Beken, and A. J. Racy
One of the main aims of this concert is to promote and make more widely known the poetry of José Montoya. The concert will feature two works with text/lyrics by poet José Montoya. One of the works, Canciones del Barrio, was commissioned by Steven Loza and the UCLA Dept. of Ethnomusicology. This piece was composed by Thomas Pasatieri for voice and string quartet and adapted for voice and orchestra by Nabil Azzam. This performance would be a world premiere of the expanded orchestral work. Montoya’s poem “La Yarda de la Escuelita” is featured in a composition by Nabil Azzam featuring a narrator who will read the poem. Improvisatory in nature, the piece will also feature performances by some of the faculty members of the Dept. of Ethnomusicology. The remainder of the concert will feature orchestral arrangements of popular, traditional, and classical Arab music.
