Maria de Buenos Aires
In a new, multimedia production set during Argentina's "Dirty War," LBO presents Astor Piazzolla and Horacio Ferrer's revolutionary María de Buenos Aires. The opera pulses to the beat of Piazzolla’s “nuevo tango” and Horacio Ferrer’s mesmerizing, imaginative libretto.
“The new production delves into the soul of this work and gives it a contemporary meaning."
Piazzolla’s tango music for this story is irresistible, incisive, electrifying, provocative, moving, and captures the conflict of Argentine society at a crucial moment in its history.
María embodies everything that is the tango and the Argentinian people. Totally consumed by passion yet fiercely maintaining her independence, María fights for survival and freedom, never surrendering. "I dream a dream that nobody ever dreamed. María noche, María pasión fatal! María del amor!"
Starring Peabody Southwell, Gregorio Gonzales, noted Latin American expert Gregorio Luke in his stage debut, and dancers from the Nannette Brodie Dance Theatre. In Spanish with English supertitles.
