A very special Film Night with a screening of “The Music of Strangers: Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble” will be presented in the Library Community Room on Friday, April 7 at 7 pm with an in-person Intro and Q & A with the film’s Academy Award-winning Director Morgan Neville.
The free event is presented by the Friends of the South Pasadena Public Library, the South Pasadena Chinese American Club, and the South Pasadena Public Library.
“The Music of Strangers: Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble”, the latest film from the creators of the Oscar-winning documentary “20 Feet from Stardom” and the critically-hailed “Best of Enemies”, follows an ever-changing lineup of performers drawn from the ensemble’s more than 50 instrumentalists, vocalists, composers, arrangers, visual artists and storytellers as they gather in locations across the world, exploring the ways art can both preserve traditions and shape cultural evolution.
Blending performance footage, personal interviews and archival film, director Morgan Neville and producer Caitrin Rogers focus on the journeys of a small group of Silk Road Ensemble mainstays from across the globe to create an intensely personal chronicle of passion, talent and sacrifice. Through these moving individual stories, the filmmakers paint a vivid portrait of a bold musical experiment and a global search for the ties that bind.
Morgan Neville is known internationally for his work on documentaries and commercials. His “20 Feet From Stardom” also won a Grammy Award for Best Music Film. Another one of his documentaries, “Best of Enemies”, on the debates between Gore Vidal and William F. Buckley, was shortlisted for the 2016 Academy Award. Neville has been nominated for four additional Grammys for his films: “Respect Yourself: The Stax Records Story”, “Muddy Waters Can’t Be Satisfied”, and Johnny Cash’s America. Neville’s non-music films include The Cool School and Beauty Is Embarrassing. Recent projects include “Chelsea Does”, “Keith Richards: Under the Influence” and “Abstract: The Art of Design” - all for Netflix.
The Library Community Room is located at 1115 El Centro Street. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and refreshments will be served. No tickets or reservations are needed. The Library is only about a block away from the Gold Line Station and free parking is available at the Mission-Meridian Parking Garage, located at 805 Meridian Avenue next to the Metro Gold Line Station.
