The Mid-Week Recital series is held January – May on the second Wednesdays of the month *unless noted. Recitals begin promptly at 12:10 p.m. and are followed by a reception with the artist. Light refreshments served. No charge.
The Mid Week Recitals are presented by Dr. James E. Smith, Music Director, and First UMC Santa Monica.
January 10 – Sal Soria, organ
Sal Soria has been the organist at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Los Angeles since its dedication in 2002. Prior to his appointment here in Los Angeles he was organist for nine years at Holy Name Cathedral in Chicago. He has been a prize winner at the International Organist Competition at the Kenndy Center in Washington, D.C., and the American Guild of Organists competition at Trinity Church, New York.
February 7* – Althea Waites, piano *Note date change to 1st Wednesday.
Internationally acclaimed American Pianist, Althea Waites, has concertized extensively throughout the United States, Europe and Asia as a brilliant soloist, chamber musician and collaborative artist. She is currently on the keyboard faculty at California State Univerisity/Long Beach, and organist/pianist at Rolling Hills United Methodist Church
March 14 – Duo Undine: Boglárka Kiss, flute Alison Bjorkedal, harp
Founded in 2005, the flute and harp duo were recently selected by the
Beverly Hills Auditions as one of the top chamber groups in Los Angeles.
Both artists maintain active schedules as professional musicians and teachers: Alison is on the faculty of California Institute of the Arts, and Boglárka teaches at Pasadena City College. Both musicians hold the Doctor of Musical Arts degree.
April 11 – Nancy Roth, violin
Violinist and violist, Nancy Roth, is currently concertmaster of the Culver City Symphony and Marina Del Rey Summer Symphony. She is a former violinist of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, was co-principal violist of the Graz Philharmonic in Austria, and served many years as concertmaster of the San Fernando Valley Symphony Orchestra. She has a Master of Music degree from The Julliard School, and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Southern California.
May 9 – Christoph Bull, organ
Dr. Bull has concertized around the world and performed at national and regional conventions of the American Guild of Organists and the Organ Historical Society. He was principle organist at First UMC Santa Monica for over six years before becoming Organist-in-Residence at First Congregational Church of Los Angeles in 2013, where he plays on one of the world’s largest pipe organs. Since 2002 he has been university organist and organ professor at UCLA.
