World Premiere Musical Event
Lyrics by Lesléa Newman ~ Music by Curtis Heard

A moving poetic and musical response to the shocking 1998 murder of gay Wyoming college student Matthew Shepard, & the aftermath that ensued. Features the 40-voice Sanctuary choir, the Wilson High School Womens’ Chorus, accomplished soloists and actors, and orchestra

October Mourning: A Song for Matthew Shepard is award-winning author Lesléa Newman and composer Curtis Heard’s poetic and musical response to the shocking 1998 murder of gay Wyoming college student Matthew Shepard, and the aftermath that ensued. This work of poetic imagination explores the impact of the vicious crime through fictitious monologues and songs from various points of view, including the fence to which Matthew was tied, the deer that kept watch beside him, and even Matthew himself. This stunning theatrical work is presented in the beautiful 100-year-old National Historic Registered sanctuary of the First Congregational Church of Long Beach, and will feature the 40-voice Sanctuary choir, the Long Beach Wilson High School Womens’ Chorus, accomplished soloists and actors, and orchestral accompaniment.

Free Will Offering—Suggested Donation $20—proceeds will be divided equally between the Matthew Shepard Foundation and the Board of Cultural Arts at First Congregational Church Long Beach.
