Family Only

Family OnlyIs it still a party if only family is invited?

WHAT: Family Only. A comedy-drama. World Premiere engagement.

WHO: Written by Darryl Vinyard. Directed by Arden Teresa Lewis. Produced by Benjamin Scuglia for Theatre West. Theatre West executive director: John Gallogly.

Will and Nicole have just bought their first home. It’s s fixer-upper, but it’s got three bedrooms and a swimming pool, and it’s south of Ventura Blvd. in Sherman Oaks. They’ve worked hard for this. Will manages a sales crew for a company that sells bug-killing chemicals. Nicole works at a child day care center with her mother-in-law. Will and Nicole have no children as yet, but Nicky wants Will to start making a baby with her, and soon.

Will and Nicky are throwing a housewarming party, but have invited only members of their own family (hence the title). There’s Will’s dad Walter, an idea man who never seemed to be able to break through and make the big bucks Andrea, Will’s half-sister, just divorced and facing the prospect of homelessness her small daughter Chloe Will’s stepmother Brenda, who’s had to put with a lot and his blunt-talking grandmother Amanda.

Will wants to share his pride and joy with his family. But instead of giving him validation, they’re coming to him, the successful one, with their own needs. But this is a party, Can this family possibly extract the F-U-N from dysfunction and have a good time? What happens today will impact the family for a long time to come.

The cast includes Riley Rae Baker, Roger Kent Cruz, Frank Gangarossa, Anne Leyden, Sheila Shaw and Dianne Travis.
Arden Teresa Lewis directs. She previously directed Theatre West’s acclaimed productions of Garry Michael Kluger’s A Thorn in the Family Paw (for which she received a Scenie Award)  and Claire Booth Luce’s The Women, as well as several of Kluger’s plays at West Fest in 2014 and 2015. She co-produced Jim Beaver’s Verdigris in 2015. An award-winning playwright, her own plays include Grandma Good, Baby Dreams, and Little Rhonda. Also an actor, she appeared in the Theatre West productions of Edward Albee’s Seascape and Noel Coward’s Waiting in the Wings. She also produces short films. She is an alumna of UCLA.

Darryl Vinyard is the playwright. Born in San Jose, he resides with his family in North Hollywood. He is an alumnus of Cal State Northridge. His previous plays include Spiders (which the L.A. Times called “extremely smart”), Changing Lanes, and a trilogy of Christmas plays, Conrad Takes the Ho-ho-ho Out of Christmas, The Birth of Jesus and the Rest of God’s Children and Giving Gifts With Santa Claus and Jesus Christ. His play Protecting His Family From Bad, Evil and Good: Mark’s Story was presented in WestFest at Theatre West in 2015. He is also a director (Minnesota Moon, Hopscotch, Partners) and an actor (From Dusk to Dawn, General Hospital, All My Children. Days of Our Lives, Romeo and Juliet, A Streetcar Named Desire, Catch 22).

Set design: Jeff G. Rack. Lighting design: Yancey Dunham. Sound design: Paolo Greco.
Family Only was developed at Theatre West.

The current presentation marks its World Premiere as a fully realized production.
Although it says on the invitation Family Only, you are most certainly invited to come to the party. Will’s family may have its quirks, but there’s fun and laughs to be had.

After the Sunday, February 19 performance, there will be a Q&A and reception with the cast and playmakers.
