Engaging Shaw

Engaging ShawCharlotte Payne-Townshend sets her cap for George Bernard Shaw in this romantic comedy. Los Angeles Premiere.

WHAT: Engaging Shaw. Los Angeles Premiere engagement of a romantic comedy based on true events.

WHO: Written by John Morogiello. Directed by Melanie MacQueen.

England, 1897. Charlotte Payne-Townshend, wealthy Irish heiress, meets George Bernard Shaw, the financially challenged but famous Irish playwright and political activist (He’s a Fabian Socialist). Will sparks fly?

Shaw is a notorious flirt and heartbreaker. He enjoys romancing women, though not particularly interested in sex. The thrill of the hunt is the main attraction for Shaw: the pursuit of women, not the keeping of them. In present-day parlance, he’d be considered a sexist.

But Charlotte is not quite like any other woman that Shaw has met before. She is a woman that he must consider to be his intellectual peer. They thrive in each other’s company, but can he resist her when she wants to take their relationship to the next level? “No man can resist a woman once she has set her sights on him, unless thwarted by another woman,” declares Charlotte. But Beatrice Webb, co-founder of the London School of Economics, who introduced the pair, also has strong feelings for Shaw.

Will Charlotte get her man?

Playwright John Morogiello is the author of last season’s Theatre 40 hit show The Consul, The Tramp and America’s Sweetheart. His other 29 produced plays include A Thing for Redheads Die, Mr. Darcy, Die! Comedy of Venice Blame It on Beckett Periodontal blues many more.

Melanie MacQueen directs. Her many previous directing credits include Separate Beds, The Drawer Boy, Months on End,, Roses in December, her own works In the Name of God or Honk If You Love Satire, Future Features and many more. Also an actor, she appears in winter 2018’s Theatre 40 production of The Manor- Murder and Madness at Greystone, She is also a founding member of the Theatre of NOTE.

Her cast for Engaging Shaw includes (in alphabetical order) Jennifer Lynn Davis, Warren Davis, Grinnell Morris and Susan Priver.

Morogiello’s imagining of the true story of the two Irish lovers arrives just in time for St. Patrick’s Day.  It’s a package of wit, humor, warmth and romance that you’re sure to enjoy.
