Cal Poly's Choirs and Arab Music Ensemble: 'A World of Music'
“A World of Music” comes to the stage of Harman Hall in the Performing Arts Center at 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 26. The Cal Poly Arab Music Ensemble, with Director Ken Habib, and Cal Poly Choirs, with Conductor Thomas Davies, will present a program with a vast array of selections from many world cultures.
The choirs—PolyPhonics, and The University Singers—will present music from South America, Israel, the English Channel Islands, South Africa, Samoa and Singapore.
American, English and German folksongs will also be included. The choirs will be accompanied by Susan Azaret Davies and Paul Woodring.
The 35-member Arab Music Ensemble will perform traditional and contemporary music and dance from the Eastern Mediterranean and larger Middle East. Their program will feature internationally acclaimed dancer L’Emir Hassan Harfouche in a Bedouin percussion-dance and in a rousing rendition of a Levantine folkdance in the dabke genre.
The combined choirs will join the Arab Music Ensemble in the performance of a classic suite of Arab art music made famous by the legendary Fairouz of Lebanon in a modern adaptation of Andalusian tradition.
Additional guest artists include San Luis Obispo dancers Saundra Sarrouf and Jenna Mitchell, as well as Los Angeles-based members of the Kan Zaman Ensemble: Wael Kakish (director) on buzuq, Ray Briggs on nay and David Martinelli on percussion.
