Bus Stop

Bus StopA cowboy falls for a chanteuse in William Inge's classic play.

First produced on Broadway in 1955, Bus Stop is a comedy (in the academic sense of the term). Bus Stop tells a story of a group of people thrown together by a blizzard to spend a long night snowbound at a diner/bus stop in rural Kansas.

It is especially the story of Bo, a young cowboy who has grown up on an isolated ranch in Montana . The wild young man has fallen for a nightclub chanteuse named Cherie while competing in a rodeo in Kansas City. He will need to be taught a lesson in humility and lose a fight before he can win the heart of the love of his life in what has become a classic American romance.
The other characters all have their own agendas, too, including the diner’s two waitresses, the bus driver, the local sheriff, an itinerant educator, and Virgil, Bo’s ranch foreman and mentor.

William Inge (1913-1973) is the playwright. The author of 41 plays, he won the Tony Award® for The Dark at the Top of the Stairs and the Pulitzer Prize for Picnic. He won an Oscar® for his screenplay of Splendor in the Grass. His other Broadway shows include Come Back Little Sheba, Natural Affection, A Loss of Roses, and Where’s Daddy? He was also an actor.

Ann Hearn Tobolowsky is the director. Her previous directing credits at Theatre 40 include Holy Days, Driving Miss Daisy, Another Part of the Forest and The Color of Rose. She has also directed at The Road Theatre, Atwater Theatre and Malibu Playhouse. She is also an actor.

Her cast for Bus Stop includes Gary Ballard, Niko Boles, David Datz, Kaitlin Huwe, Shawn Savage, Jack Sundmacher, Michele Schultz and Mani Yarosh.

“That nice, well-bred next door neighbor, with the accent that belongs to no region except the region of good manners, has begun to uncover a world within a world, and it is not the world that his welcome prepared you to meet, it’s a secret world that exists behind the screen of neighborly decorum. And that’s where and when you meet the talent of William Inge.”---Tennessee Williams
