USO-Themed Performance Showcase Celebrates Preservation of Historic Theatre and Its Majestic Wonder Morton Organ
San Diegans are invited to a community celebration honoring a milestone birthday for the historic Balboa Theatre and its majestic Wonder Morton Organ.
The Balboa Theatre's 95th birthday gala will pay special tribute to the USO in a sparkling performance showcase produced by San Diego song-and-dance sensation, Ric Henry. The star-studded musical review will delineate the musical history of the USO from the 1940s to the present day.
In a demonstration of the power and versatility of the Wonder Morton Organ, the Balboa Theatre's Resident Organist Russ Peck will perform a captivating musical backdrop to a classic black and white silent film, starring the legendary comedic duo Laurel and Hardy.
Inspired by their mission to preserve, maintain and promote the Wonder Morton Organ, Balboa Theatre Organ Society members conceived the gala as a festive commemoration of the restoration, installation and re-dedication of the Balboa Theatre's musical jewel. The 1929 Wonder Morton Organ is one of only four such organs in the world.
Working in partnership with San Diego Theatre's, Inc., a team of volunteers is planning an evening-to-remember inspired by their collective passion to sustain the Balboa Theatre's colorful musical legacy for generations to come.
