Antony & Cleopatra-The Musical

Antony & Cleopatra-The MusicalShakespeare's historical romance, presented with a contemporary song score.

Shakespeare’s Antony & Cleopatra is rarely produced in Southern California, and it may be because the genre-defying play is one of the Bard’s most complex: It’s a history play, but it takes liberties with historical facts It could be seen as a sequel to Julius Caesar, yet it stands on its own Its heroine is a leader of men, but also an object of male sexual desire. Its complexity, however, may be the source of its appeal.
Antony & Cleopatra has its all: Romance, passion, sex, heartbreak, the fascination of royalty, war, politics, the epic sweep of history and, at its center, one of history’s most celebrated love stories: that of Antony, a general and triumvir of the Roman Republic who defied his Emperor and the woman for whom Antony was willing to risk all, the Macedonian usurper of the throne of Egypt, the mighty Queen Cleopatra.
In one of her signature moves, director Gloria Gifford retains Shakespeare’s text while augmenting the proceedings with a contemporary song score.
The New York and Broadway- trained director/actress/teacher Gloria Gifford  received an M.A. from the New School, where she studied Criminology after graduating with a degree in Political Science from SUNY New Paltz.  She has directed over 75 stage productions, including On Golden Pond (with Salome Jens and Andrew Prine), Our Lady of 121st St.  (L.A. Times Critic’s Choice), Much Ado About Nothing, The Tempest, Romantic Comedy, A Bed and a Bar, Summer and Smoke, Wait Until Dark, and many more. A veteran actor with credits on Broadway, in hit films (opposite Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy, John Candy and Tobey Maguire), and recurring roles on four TV series, she has also been known as an acting coach to emerging stars and as the producer of the Rebel Planet Short Film Festival in Hollywood. She is currently the recipient of two NAACP Theatre Award nominations for directing (Much Ado About Nothing Down on Your Knees and Up to the Moon).
