San Gabriel Valley Repertory Theatre has the honor to premiere a new melodrama, “A Blunderhaven Christmas” beginning Dec. 2 in Covina.
This is quite a distinction for SGVRT, the only Southern California theatre company keeping the art of melodrama alive year-round with its “Dining Dramatically” dinner-theatre performances.
SGVRT’s melodramas are interactive fun for the whole family as everyone gets into the action by cheering the hero, booing and hissing the villain and sighing for the damsel in distress.
Performances will be Dec. 2-3, 16-17 at Mari’s Kitchen, 1319 N. Grand Ave., Covina, CA 91724, and Dec. 9-10 at Eden Garden Café, 1447 E. Route 66, Glendora, CA 91741.
Written by melodrama playwright John Burkhart, “A Blunderhaven Christmas” tells about siblings Bertha and Sir Boris Blunderhaven who are a perfectly happy family except for the curse of clumsiness. Unfortunately, Bertha’s fiancé, D. Maximus Dorkus plans to steal Bertha’s inheritance and do away with Sir Boris. With the new maid, Betty Bloodhound, and the new butler, Percival Gumshoe, and the prerequisite nosey neighbor Gertrude Gossipmonger, the Blunderhaven house is full for the holidays. Does the season of peace and brotherly love prevail or does the villain get away with, well, everything?
