Brahms Requiem

The Long Beach Chorale and Chamber Orchestra’s performance features a 65-voice chorus, a 30-piece orchestra, soprano soloist Jenny Spence, and baritone soloist David Stoneman. Choir members described the 150-year-old Requiem as “the piece that first made me fall in love with choral music,” “totally magical,” and “life-changingly good music”!

The Long Beach Chorale and Chamber Orchestra, a fixture of the Long Beach arts community for 21 years, takes on one of the monuments of Western music with a performance of the German Requiem of Johannes Brahms. The concert, under the direction of Eliza Rubenstein, is at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 13, and at 4 p.m. Sunday, March 14, at Grace First Presbyterian Church, 3955 N. Studebaker Road, Long Beach.

The Chorale is excited to be performing the work in its new home venue, Grace First Presbyterian Church, where the acoustics are outstanding and no seat is more than 90 feet from the stage:

“Our new motto is ‘great music, up close,’ and this concert ought to exemplify that ideal,” Rubenstein said.

“The Brahms Requiem has been on my musical must-do list since I first encountered the piece as a teenager,” Rubenstein said. “We’ve been working up to this concert for several years, and I’ve never heard the chorus sound better than it does right now. This should be a thrilling concert for our audience.”

The Chorale is an all-volunteer chorus founded in 1988. The group’s performances have earned them a reputation as “our best local chorus,” according to Jim Ruggirello of the Long Beach Gazette. Ruggirello has had high praise for the Chorale’s recent performances, writing in his December review, “The world, and our community, needs their brand of intimate, excellent music-making.”
